The Hot Seat

Our first coach on the Hot Seat this year is Matt Patricia. of the Detroit Lions. Matt Patricia got embarrassed by a New York Jets squad that only won 5 games last year. Now, the Jets did play well, but the Lions looked flustered on both sides of the ball. Matthew Stafford threw 4 interceptions, his fifth game with 4+ interceptions of his career, the most in the NFL. Not only did Stafford throw picks, but he missed wide open receivers, made bad reads, and just looked lost. On a 1st and 10 on the Jets 21 yard line in the 2nd Quarter, Stafford throws his second interception of the game. The play was an RPO with the receivers running a slant-flat combination. Both defensive backs took the slant route, yet Stafford still threw the slant to TJ Jones. Luckily for the Lions, Kenny Golladay laid a monster hit on Trumaine Johnson to force the fumble, which Golladay recovered, to give the Lions the ball back.

As bad as the offense was, it was the defense that was worse. Matt Patricia was with the Patriots for 14 seasons, and was the defensive coordinator for five years (2007-2012). He is a defensive minded coach, and yet, he let a rookie quarterback, a group of inexperienced wide-receivers, and an offensive coordinator who has bounced around the league since 2002. The Jets dropped 48 points on Matt Patricia’s defense. Sam Darnold, after his first pass, looked calm and pro-ready. He was 16 of 21 for 198 yards and 2 touchdowns. Isaiah Crowell, a player that had lost his 31 of his last 32 games ran for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns. Crowell already tied his touchdown count from last year. The Jets dominated the Lions the whole game and the Lions were embarrassed on primetime television.

And that brings us to Matt Patricia. He won 3 Super Bowls with New England and was considered a defensive genius. Todd Bowles coached circles around Patricia. It is only Week 1, and there are still 15 games left. The Lions will be fine, but Patricia was outmatched this week.
